Underblog has learned that Morse code has gained a new character. On the 3rd of this month, .——.—. became the official code for ‘@’, five years too late for it to make Morse appear cool. It is the first change to the code for at least 60 years. The symbol is apparently needed by ham radio enthusiasts to make it easier for them to exchange email addresses. Some enthusiasts are not satisfied, they had been hoping that a symbol for the exclamation mark would also be added. I guess they’ll have to use .—.. ——— .—.. instead. That’s “lol”, by the way.

Can’t the Ham Radio Enthusiasts just email each other all the time instead?!?

Aww, let them play their little games if they want to.

Yeah, come on Jonny, it’ll be fun! I’ll get my ham radio and you get yours, come on, this’ll be great. I’ll go first. Or do you want to? Tell you what, I’ll send you an e-mail with the details…

Heavens to Betsy! I think you’re right; the noble pursuit of ham radio will be awash with internet-speak in no time at all. Oh, and your brother? He’a a very, very silly man - thankfully, I escaped with a cushy warehouse job; unloading lorries, taking an hour’s break for every 15 minutes I’m due, sunbathing on the roof… Still, that’s not the point. I still work in a shop, and shop work is evil.

Spookily enough, just last Saturday my eldest brother passed the Radio Ham exam. I think it’s quite sweet that they want to update Morse Code (I thought its use had been discontinued though?)
Talking of anoraks, did you know that the police at Heathrow refer to the assembled plane spotters as the GANG? Green Anorak No Girlfriend.
