Nature Red in Tooth and Claw

Thursday, March 11th, 2004

According to this bbc article, bird-watchers were in for a surprise when they turn up to see a cute ikkle rare american robin which had the misfortune to end up in Grimsby. (I’ve never been to Grimsby, but I assume it’s not a very nice place. They should really think about renaming it.) According to the article:

[The robin's] scientific name Turdus migratorius derives from its long-distance travels within America

Perhaps I’m childish, but I’d be more interested in knowing where the poor feathery fellow gets the first half of its scientific name from. Imagine the bullying it must have endured at school…

Surprisingly important websites: No. 23 Elgoog

Has anyone else missed this “Google Mirror” until now?
Some people have far too much spare time on their hands, you might think. You’d be right. However, this particular site was not a complete waste of webspace. When China blocked google, web-savvy surfers in china with an ability to read text backwards were able to access the search engine via this site. China’s firewall operators neglected to block access to Elgoog, apparently believing it to be a joke and not fully functional.

First Post

Ok, I’m still getting this blog up and running, but for an inaugural post how about the following: I greatly enjoyed Simon Hoggart’s piece on the biblical argument against gay marriage.

“Marriage shall not impede a man’s right to take concubines, in addition to his wife or wives. (II Sam 5:13; I Kings 11:3; II Chron 11:21)…”

A most excellent example of reductio ad adsurdum.
